Rescue Remedy is one type of Bach Flower Remedies developed by Dr Edward Bach in the 1930s.
Even though Rescue Remedy is in fact just one type of Bach Flower Remedies, the term is often used interchangeably.
Bach Flower Essences are homeopathic remedies that are part of, so called, alternative therapies. Homeopathy, natural health care, is a healing therapy system that uses natural substances, like plants and minerals (elements of nature), to stimulate the healing process.
Homeopathic practitioners believe that the body has the ability to heal itself. In the case of Bach Flower Remedies, a process is used to imprint the energy of natural substances into water and then use that energized water in a dilution to stimulate healing in the body.
Homeopathy, a safe and natural system, was developed in the 18th century in Germany and it is a common practice in many European countries.
Using the theory “treat the patient, not the disease”, Dr. Bach, who had become interested in immunology and worked as a bacteriologist, based the flower remedies on the philosophy that only once there is harmony between the physical and spiritual side, can the body begin its own natural healing process.
The remedies are made from wild flowers, leaves of plants and part of trees, which are diluted to a homeopathic level and preserved in grape alcohol or brandy. Available in health food shops, chemists and many supermarkets, they are safe for humans and animals alike.
There are 38 flower remedies which treat specific emotions, such as Olive for exhaustion and convalescence, Aspen, Mimulus and Rock Rose to help combat different types of fear, and Cherry Plum, Rock Rose, Vervain, which has proved helpful where animals are highly strung, nervous or under stress.
When the water molecule in our bodies has the correct polarity the water in the cells ‘spins the right way’ and assembly lines in the body move as they should, nutrients are used as they should and toxins are detoxified like they should.
Reversed Polarity happens when the water in the cells of a being moves in the reversed direction than it should and this occurs every single time that the being experiences stress.
Reversed polarity becomes chronic when the being does not recover from the stress, but stays in this state for extended periods of time.
A normal recovery time is one to five days, everything above five days is considered chronic and will start having a negative impact on our health conditions.
Probably the best known Essence is Rescue Remedy, which Dr Edward Bach created as an emergency combination to help reduce fear, nervousness or grief, as well as to cope with stressful situations and shock and for that reason this remedy is popular among the horse owners.
Rescue Remedy contains five flower remedies: Impatiens, Star of Bethlehem, Cherry Plum, Rock Rose and Clematis.
Dr Bach described it like tuning a piano that has been banged on by life. The homeopathic nature of the remedies carry a balancing energy that is transferred to the spirit or energy body through ingesting or putting on the skin.
The body spirit or energy wants to be balanced and it will support that process if the right remedy is applied to the situation and if there are no physical reasons for the issue. Dr Edward Bach has written several books that go into more detail about how they work and his process of creating them.
Flower Essence Therapy can be used situationally for instance, before and during trailering or moving to a new owner and herd or they can be used to support releasing past traumas. Situationally, the remedies that are applicable are used for a specific amount of time.
If you are treating a specific historical trauma or potentially supporting a triggered response to specific situations then you can use a combination of remedies related to that historical situation making a combination of remedies and using the treatment remedy for a month to six weeks and review progress and see if additional remedies are needed once that combination is complete. Sometimes dealing with history is like peeling an onion.
There are common remedies for common issues and there are always outliers that would benefit from potentially other remedies than written here.
Bach Flower Remedies is a very intuitive process because we are supporting behaviors/emotions and energy. Common ones would be Aspen for spooking for unknown reasons. Mimulus for fear about known things like trailering.
White Chestnut and Clematis for busy minds or not able to focus. Walnut for energetically sensitive and hard time making transitions. Rescue Remedy, Rock Water, Sweet Chestnut, Water Violet, Honeysuckle and Agrimony for a shut down horse.
Beech, Cherry Plum, Heather, Honeysuckle, Vervain, Vine and Walnut could be used for aggressive horses. There are times that those remedies could also be used one after the other or only particular remedies as not every horse will have all of the behaviors that each remedy may apply to.
Rescue horses, nervous horses, abused or shutdown horses or in some cases horses that have been performance horses in the past or horses who have had a harsher breaking experience or who have had some sort of trauma are horses that could benefit from Rescue Remedy as an ongoing treatment to support their recovery.
Again, it is an intuitive support tool that is available. There are times when the horse’s empathy for the owner and their situations also benefit from Rescue Remedy.
Any animal or person who has experienced loss could also benefit from Rescue Remedy.
Situations like fireworks, thunderstorms or other surprising noises if you know they are happening or even after they have happened can help support a horse as well. Depending on the horse as well, it can be helpful prior to or after vet or farrier visits.
Bach Flower Essences are derived from plants, trees, and in some cases, minerals. They are completely non-toxic and have very little taste or smell and work in a gentle fashion to balance the emotional and physical bodies of the animal.
They can safely be given to all other animals of all shapes and sizes, not just horses.
Bach Flowers are essences which are derived from trees and, in some cases, minerals. They're completely non-toxic and have little taste or smell and work gently to balance the emotional and physical bodies of animals, horses included.
Horses undergoing flower essence therapy cannot overdose on flower essences.
If you are adding the remedies into horse's drinking water, the dosing that seems effective is four drops per liter of water or 16 drops per gallon of water.
If you are dosing onto food, dose the same amount of drops into the water roughly used to create the mash.
A few drops can also be added to your hand and you can rub your horse's ears if they like that or you can play with their muzzle if they like that while rubbing it onto the horse's mouth.
Less is more with any homeopathic. Bach Flower Remedies are no different so if you have the actual remedy directly from Bach then I suggest using a dilution of 2 drops per remedy into a 30 ml bottle.
Use a medicine dropper and then using that dilution as your treatment bottle to add to the water of the being that is being treated.
For instance, adding 16 drops from the 30ml treatment bottle to a gallon of water in the horse's drinking bucket.
The remedies are stored in alcohol or brandy and diluting it first removes the smell and the taste and increases the effectiveness.
Healing Vitality, based in Canada, sells treatment bottles with more than one remedy.
We sell them locally or ship them with postage if it makes economic sense to do so with the total postage cost versus buying the tinctures directly for the client.
Otherwise, Bach remedies are available online through various holistic health supply sellers and through Bach Flower Remedy own website directly.
